In 1994 Peter Somfai graduated from the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest and was invited to work as a lighting designer in operetta Theatre. He learned a lot from the older colleagues in the other theatres; he was developing the theater lighting systems using the ultra-modern remote control systems. In 2000 he became technical director of the Operetta and Musical Theater in Budapest.
Among successful works of Somfai as a lighting designer should be mentioned following productions: “Madame Butterfly” G. Puccini, “Macbeth” G. Verdi, “Der fliegende Hollдnder” R. Wagner, “Les contes d'Hoffmann” J. Offenbach and “Carmen” G. Bizet in Budapest and Szeged.
In his theatre P. Somfai participated in famous productions of musicals “Romeo and Juliette” G. Presgurvic, “Elisabeth” and “Mozart” S. Levay, “Rudolf” F. Wildhorn, “Miss Saigon” Cl.-M. Schцnberg, and others.
P. Somfai received numerous invitations to create lighting design for the shows abroad. He worked at the Opera House in Frankfurt for the production of operetta by F. Lehar “Die Lustige Witwe”, in Viennese Volksoper – for operetta by I. Kalman “Grдfin Mariza”, in Tokio, Osaka and Bangkok – for “Madame Butterfly” G. Puccini, in Bucharest – for “Die Csбrdбsfьrstin” I. Kalman, he created lighting design for the productions of R. Wagner’s opera “Der fliegende Hollnder” in several theatres of France etc.
In 2014, Peter Shomfai was invited for the first time to the St. Petersburg Theater of Musical Comedy, where he created the lighting design for the musical "Jekyll & Hyde".
